Ah! Computers, processor architectures, assembly languages. These three share the most intertwined relation. I came across an article recently by one Robert P. Colwell who analyzes a very earlier architecture of Intel, predecessor of the now ubiquitous i386 architecture, the Intel 432(1988). This surmises the basic architecture and the pitfalls in decisions taken by the makers of the chip and the workarounds. You can get the article here.
