The Last Lecture

July 26, 2008 at 8:20 am (Uncategorized) (, )

If you had only six months to live, what would you do? How would you live your life? Some questions these. They will help you put in perspective the things you are doing now and how much they really matter to you? The relations you share, the importance you give to people will become atleast a bit  clearer.

Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch’s “The Last Lecture”(link) will definitely stand out as one of the most inspiring lectures to have ever been delivered. It is a rather unusual classroom lecture, with the powerpoint presentations and all. The video became viral and thousands have written on how it inspired them.

“The brick walls are there for a reason,” he said during his lecture. “The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something.”

He passed away today, inspiring many on the way to lead complete lives with priorities set right. Here’s praying for his soul to rest in peace.

Accepted!!

July 25, 2008 at 8:26 am (Uncategorized) (, , )

Yup,

My submission(however insignificant it might be :D ) has been accepted into the 2.6.26 kernel. I’ve just received an email from Greg KH asking for attribution of my submission. Snippet of the mail follows…

Your email address shows up in the changelog for the 2.6.26 kernel
release as a contributor, but I can’t seem to place it with a company.
If you don’t mind, could you let me know what company you work for?  Or
if no company, do you want to be classified in any of these other
categories instead:
- Amateur/Hobbyist/None
- this category is for people who are doing kernel work, but
not getting paid by any corporation to do it.
- Consultant
- this category is for people who are consultants working on
the kernel and getting paid by other companies (not your
own) to do the work
- Academia
- this category is for people working for Universities and
doing kernel work as part of their research or other
responsibilities related to school work.
- Unknown
- this category is for people who want to remain in the
“unknown” category.

Well, I do use ubuntu. And seeing the dust raised by a recent comment by Greg KH himself(here) that ubuntu made some 5 changes in the past 5 years, I was tempted to attribute it to Ubuntu.

But I din’t know if it was fair for the ubuntu developers when I am not part of any official kernel  team to do that. So, I choose the amateur and hobbyist field.

Hope my contributions get larger and are significant enough from the next time onwards :)

resurrection

July 19, 2008 at 11:48 pm (Uncategorized) (, , )

Hey ppl,

This post might be to resurrect my blog, but no. This is about where u need $500billion (yes, that’s with a ‘b’) for your expenses each day and where you need $250Billion to go home after work. Yes, there is a place like that.

Zimbabwe as we know has recently printed a $100billion note.. that only catch is that it is a Zimbabwean dollar (Z$). A place where inflation is 2,200,000%. We here are loathing for a meagre 12%(well, it’s headed to 12 :( ). Let’s look at the positive side and thank our ministers for keeping us at a better position comparitively.

We still aren’t better than our third world counterparts(Brazil, where it is still in single digits thanks to their less dependence on external oil). Let’s hope that we’ll be able to resurrect ourselves from this crisis and get on with our world conquering goals :)

time to brush up…

May 9, 2008 at 10:29 pm (Uncategorized) (, , )

Well, as of this posting, i am officially a graduate… now that i have some time to spare before joining my job, i would like to revise some topics in algo and kernel.

I need to brush up my concepts on red-black trees, special interest for this since the new CFS scheduler in linux uses rb-trees. Also microkernel OS minix 3 concepts are to be read.

I’ll keep here posted about what i read :)

End Sems

April 27, 2008 at 4:19 am (Uncategorized) ()

It’s time for the exams again.

I will be giving my last semester exams here in college. Hopefully they will be the last exams I’m going to write for some time to come. :)

I have Distributed Systems in the evening tomorrow, immediately followed by Complex Networks on the morning of Tuesday. Writing back-to-back exams is a pain for sure.

I got my joining date to my new job at Mentor Graphics, Noida on 1st July ‘08. Hope the (in)famous Delhi summer subsides by then. The summers there are really horrible.

Time to prepare for the exams, Wish me luck :)

bye

Operating systems…

February 2, 2008 at 2:13 pm (operating systesms) (, )

I’ve been reading quite a few things lately. The microkernel vs monolithic kernel debate seems to continue. It is true that the idea of having a highly modularized kernel sounds very interesting. But according to experts it is very hard to actually implement and carries a significant amount of overhead. But, once the core part of it is done the rest of the system should be easier to develop owing to the modularized nature. It might also be highly robust since one component of the system cannot affect another component since they are separated. Andy Tanenbaum, the venerable academic whose research areas include secure and reliable systems has always advocated the idea of a microkernel. He, along with a student Jorrit N. Hereder have redeveloped Minix (the father of linux) into it’s current version 3. Will be trying it out very soon.
